Wessex Karate Academy are celebrating another successful year from the National Championships held in Southbourne.

A total of 29 medals were brought home consisting of five gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze.

The competition comprises of three events, Kumite (point sparring), Kata (pre-arranged forms) and three or five man team events. The children take part in the three man team event which is Synchronized forms and the adults take part in the five man team event which consists of Kata, Applications of that Kata and free style fighting.

Medallists include: Charlotte Ryan (Gold) for Junior Kata in the white/yellow belt category, Nicolle May (Gold) in the brown belt category, Jamie Northover (Gold) in the larger boys Kumite category, Sian Franklin (Gold) in the larger girls Kumite category and Dave Evans (Gold) in the men’s Kumite category. Gary Foot, Paul Foot, Scott Robyns, Tim Horsington and Peter Thompson (Silver) for the adult Sanshumoku and the team Kata, Alex Mold (Silver) for Junior Kata blue belt category, Steve Groves (Silver) for the senior Kata white – orange belt category, Catriona Groves (Silver) for ladies Kumite and Tom Evans (Silver) for larger boys Kumite. Liam Heard, Dawn Catterall and Nicolle May (Bronze) for junior team Kata (higher grades), Atul Ramesh, Bradley Taylor and Charlotte Ryan (Bronze) for junior team Kata, Catriona Groves (Bronze) for senior Kata in the green – purple belt category, Dave Evans (Bronze) for senior Kata in the brown belt category, Jack Joyce (Bronze) for small boys Kumite, Alex Mold (Bronze) for larger boys Kumite and Natasha Stuart (Bronze) for ladies Kumite.

Wessex Karate Academy would like to thank all the parents and students involved for their support past and present and to say many thanks to all the students who took part. A good day was had by all!

Students are now looking forward to the regional championships held later this year.
