Given the recent Stay At Home announcement all classes will now move to Zoom. A timetable will be published shortly but the first Zoom class will be the adult’s class tonight at 8pm.
“Dust off your tablets, clear the living room space, we are back on Zoom!
There will be an adult class tonight at 8pm. I will then work out a timetable for lockdown, sticking loosely to the current class timetable. You should not need to re-register but do check you have the latest update if you haven’t used it for a few months. If you have not used zoom before, click on the link, register your email and log on tonight about 7.50pm. See you there!
I know for many zoom classes are not ideal but we need to keep our training and technique skills up and stay positive that this is our last full lockdown and then we can get back to the dojo ready to improve further.”
Due to Dorchester and Weymouth moving into tier 3 restrictions all adult group classes have been cancelled until further notice. Also, since the Dorchester Yoga centre is temporarily closing all Dorchester classes are also cancelled.
However, whilst adult group training is not permitted you are allowed to visit the Weymouth gym and train independently. If you wish to train at the gym please book the ‘Open mat session’.
The junior classes (under 18) in Weymouth are still available, including a new Cadet class (14+), so please book.
Sensei Pete Thompson from Wessex Karate has been offered sponsorship to teach free karate classes for children (age 8-18) with educational health care needs (EHCP). If you know a child that you think could benefit from this programme or would like more information please contact Sensei Pete.
We are pleased to announce our first main group grading of the year. To be held on Sunday 22nd November 2020 at the Weymouth dojo. The gradings will be as follows:
Adults – all kyu grades: 10.00 – 12.30pm
Children – white & yellow belts: 1.30 – 3.00pm
Children – orange belts & higher: 3.15 – 5.00pm
Due to limitation on numbers, if you are not grading please ask your instructor if you should attend the session.
Please ensure your licenses are up to date.
The grading fees are:
Adult £20.00 Junior (under 18) £15.00
On Friday 6th November we are holding a mini Gasshuku at the Weymouth dojo in preparation for the black belt gradings being held on the following day. The spaces will be available first for black belts and then brown then to other kyu grades until all the spaces have been booked. Booking is now available online through the normal Wessex booking page. Training is from 4.45 til 7.00pm and the cost will be £15.00.
Wessex Karate Academy holds safeguarding, mental health and well-being as a priority within our club. Some of our members have shared how karate has been a lifeline during the Covid-19 pandemic. We ask that members approach either Sensei Pete or our welfare officer, Carly 07850 732303 if you have been affected by the pandemic or have longer term needs that can be born in mind when considering individual needs within the club.
Secondly, our club wish to make an ‘only way is Wessex Karate’ short film. Watch this space! Filming short stories of how karate has helped you personally with mental health or diagnosed needs within the pandemic. This film can help advertise and apply for much needed funding. Please approach Pete, Aaron or Carly if you wish to take part or have a story to share.
Message from Sensei Pete regarding the gradual return to normal training and private classes:
"Most classes are the same as the last few weeks but you will see 121 on some days, these are private sessions for adults like I did before lock down at the dojo. Some are now booked for four weeks but one is open to be booked each week and I will slowly increase them. They are paid for separately and you will need to contact me direct. As it stands I will be running them from Radipole park in Weymouth but I may look into a Dorchester venue in the near future. From next week will start small classes for up to six students, I will probably do a single children's class and a couple of adult or family classes, because of demand and contact rules they will need to be booked in advance. I will be prioritising to those students who cannot train online but have been paying fees throughout this period. If this is you please get in touch to let me know if you are interested.I will be keeping most zoom classes going and every online class you do counts towards your zoom certificates and future grading attendances so lets keep training!"
Sensei Pete will be hosting a Zoom virtual training session on Fri 26 Mar 2020. If it’s successful the plan is to host several a week over the next coming weeks and months. Tomorrow’s sessions will be:
3pm – Adults
4pm – Kids
Please see the Facebook site for more information about joining the Zoom session:
