National Championships

This year’s National Championships is being hosted by Wessex Karate Academy, on Sunday 30th September at the Wey Valley School, Weymouth.

We encourage everyone to have a go but if you are unable to participate or you are a parent of a student then please come along and support our club.

Additionally we are looking for volunteers to help with the running of the event. We need scorers, timekeepers and caterers. Please speak to Sensei’s Peter or Paul if you are able to help.

Competition Practice

There will be competition practice on Saturday 22nd September at the Weymouth Dojo from 10 – 12pm. There will be no charge for this extra practice. Please let Sensei Peter know if you will be attending.

Summer Gasshuku

Students and Instructors recently attended the Summer Gasshuku in Spain. Congratulations to the following students who have been promoted as follows:

Summer Gradings

The next grading times have been set and are as follows:

Monday 2nd July in Weymouth:

5.30 – 7.00pm Junior White & Yellow Belts

7.15 – 9.30pm Senior Kyu Grades

Tuesday 3rd July in Dorchester:

5.30 – 7.30pm Junior Orange-Purple Belts

7.45 – 9.30pm Mock Grading for Black Belts grading in Spain

Friday 6th July in Weymouth:

7.00 – 9.30pm Brown / Black Belts (1st & 2nd Dans)

 

All students are expected to attend their grading group whether they are grading or not.

Please remember to bring mouth guards / mitts and shin pads. Please ensure your licenses are up to date.

The grading fees are:

Adult  £20.00      Junior (under 18)    £15.00

Martial Arts Open Day – Apr 14th

Wessex Traditional Martial Arts is holding a Martial Arts open day on Saturday 14th April 2018, 9:30am – 2pm.

Location: WTMA Gym in Weymouth

The day will include 30 minute workshops in many of the various martial art styles run at the WTMA gym, including:

  • Okinawan Karate
  • Traditional Judo (*)
  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (*)
  • Okinawan Weaponary (*)
  • Boxing
  • Taekwondo

(*) Students must be 14 or older to take part.

The event is being held as a fund raiser for a new roof at the gym and a £5 minimum donation is requested.

Newsletter – Mar 2018

AGM

Wessex Karate Academy is run by a committee which is elected at the Annual General Meeting.  This year’s AGM is on Thursday, 26 April 2018 at 7.30pm at the WTMA Gym (Weymouth Dojo).  Please speak to Paul Foot (Chairman) if you are interested in being involved.  But please feel free to attend if you are just interested to see how the club is running.

WTMA Workshop & Open Day

Have you ever wanted to try a martial art but don’t know your judo from your jiu-jitsu? WTMA gym is raising money for major development at their venue (Weymouth dojo) with an open day for anyone interested to see what they do and join in with 30 minute workshops in some of the martial arts styles held there. There will be workshops in Boxing, Taekwondo, Okinawan Karate, Traditional Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Okinawan Weaponry. All ages are welcome but many of the martial arts styles are only available for over 14 years old to participate. To take part a £5.00 minimum donation is requested.

Crewkerne Club

Sensei Paul Foot has opened a new club in Crewkerne, Somerset. Initially this will be a kids class on a Wednesday evening. Please speak to Sensei Paul for more information.

Kobudo Courses

WTMA will be hosting two Kobudo courses:

28 April 2018:  Gabe Weyman from Frome

19 – 21 June 2018: Dell Hamby

Dell Hamby will also be taking a Uechi Ryu class during the adult class on Tuesday 19 June 2018.

Easter Holidays

All classes will be on as usual over the Easter Holidays except for Easter Sunday where there will be no class.

GKI Summer Gasshuku 2018

For those interested in the 2018 GKI Summer Gasshuku the details are:

Dates: Wed, July 25th – Sat, July 28th

Location: San Luis de Sabinillas, Spain

Hosted by: Club Deportivo de Karate Goju-Ryu NSK

The club have created a dedicated web site for the event, which has the training schedule, details of local hotels and online registration:

There has been a lot of interest from other GKI clubs, national and international, for this event so you might want to book early to avoid disappointment.

National Championships – Oct 21st 2017

This year’s National Tournament is being hosted by the Ashridge Dojo, on Saturday October 21st at the Ashlyns School, Chesham road, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, HP43AH.

Registration opens at 9am, competition starts at 10am.

Students can enter for 3 events Kata, Kumite and Team Kata.

All kumite competitors MUST have their own, kumite mitts, gum shield and ideally shin guards before arriving at the venue, some equipment can be supplied.

Entry cost for 1 or all events- Senior £20 Junior £15

All entry forms must be in by 15th October or there maybe be an extra charge from the event organisers for late entries. There will be extra competition practise on Sunday 15th October at the Weymouth Dojo, Lynch lane, Weymouth 10-1pm, please confirm if you will be attending the extra training. Transport will be available to the event, please indicate if you need spaces.

Monday 3 July in Weymouth:

Tuesday 4 July in Dorchester:

5.30 – 7.30pm Junior Orange-Brown Belts

All students are expected to attend their grading group whether they are grading or not. Please remember to bring mouth guards / mitts and shin pads. Don’t forget mitts will become compulsory at gradings at the end of the year.

Sunday, 9 July – Wessex will be hosting the GKI Brown and Black Belt Seminar at the WTMA Gym, Weymouth.

From 1.00 – 3.30pm.

The course fee will be £10.00.
